“competition is good for consumers as well as businesses”…How?

I've heard alot of people say that capitalism is great because it keeps businesses in competition to deliver the best service/product/whatever. But is that strictly true? And surely even in that case, it only benefits those businesses that are able to compete in the first place? Can someone explain this to me? It sounds like total horseshit
