a couple of years ago i worked very briefly at a bacon factory and it. was. terrible. i'd been out of work a long time and just needed something as a stepping stone. back then, it was even minimum wage. it was also a union job but you'd never guess since it was such shitty work. well, i guess that union must have gotten into it because now the job pays $20 to $22 an hour and has benefits that include a company pension. maybe unions actually work?
but it's just such. awful. work, i don't know if i could do it again. you're either throwing 40lb slabs of meat into bins for an hour or sorting through bacon that's full of puss from abscesses the poor hog suffered on its body. sometimes shifts are 12 hours. the machinery makes any communication with your coworkers impossible and the pace of work is unbelievable.
honestly, i might rather work at tim horton's but that $20 is very tempting.
