I tested positive yesterday and work for a small company with only 41 total employees, including owners. 2 other employees (sales) have also tested positive over the weekend, and one more has symptoms but so far has gotten a negative test.
Our IT department is extremely strict, to the point that they will not allow any remote access. If someone needs to work from home they supply a special laptop and encryption key. There are only 2 laptops and only the sales department are allowed those. I'm not in sales but in marketing and I was told that I can't have a laptop to work. I am allowed to do online things, which is enough though.
That's not my problem though. I know for a fact that “certain” employees do have remote access. The IT and HR heads have lied to the owners saying that absolutely no employees have remote access. The office employee that has had close contact and should quarantine has been told that he has to take PTO (for today at least). He is currently under my management. I know they won't allow him a laptop because they only have the 2 and go to sales people. He only has one day of PTO available so for the rest of the time he will have to take it unpaid. He's a young guy with a young family and can't afford to take it unpaid. He is in my department and I'm going to fight for him to be able to do online work the same as myself, but I'm not sure if they'll go for it. I have plenty of real work for him to do, so that's not a problem.
If I rat out the lying IT and HR guys, my life will be hell. But the lying and allowing certain people privileges that other people aren't allowed make me sick. For me personally I'll be fine, but I'm having a really hard time with this way of doing things.
What should I do? Should I keep my mouth shut? I'll still get paid regardless. For other people though, having to take a few days unpaid work is devastating. The owners of course are old rich guys who were born with silver spoons so they have absolutely no idea what it's like to have to try to make ends meet.
I'm really struggling here and need some solid advice.
