Coworker gave five weeks notice, company never bothered trying to find his replacement. Now they’ve lost 66% of the department.

I lead a three person department. We had a new hire come in about six months ago, who let slip what his starting wage was. It was 15% higher than my own starting wage, and 5% higher than my other employees current wage. So the other worker put in a five week notice. Guess he was somehow still managing to feel generous. His last day was this past Friday. It was a blow to the department, because this guy performed his job flawlessly. Given that he had put in five weeks notice, I assumed they would have more than enough time to get a replacement hired, and he could be trained by the guy who's been doing this task for the past six years First week, no one comes in for an interview. Same goes for the second, the third, the fourth, and his final week there. As someone who's…

First week, no one comes in for an interview. Same goes for the second, the third, the fourth, and his final week there.

As someone who's been eyeing the door since Thanksgiving, I've been checking job postings daily for months. Not one post from our company was ever made.

Monday this week, boss man comes back to the department and says that I will have to split the work he was doing with the other worker, until they can “figure something out.”

Well, I'm not about to do more work for the same shitty pay. So yesterday I finished my shift, pulled him aside and told him that if he's going to be hiring people on at rates competitive to mine, he doesn't value the years of experience I have working for him. That I'm getting off the job track and on to a career path, because working here just means more of the same shitty living conditions, and I deserve better.

This new employee that was hired at such a higher starting wage has next to no experience in the department, and will now lead it. But the best part? We're just now getting past supply chain issues, and the volume of work is picking back up.

Good luck.
