Coworkers at work are praising a certain coworker for working from 8am-9pm

Some context: I’m fresh out of college, 22 years old (as are most of my coworkers), working in sales at a Fortune 500 company. One of our fellow sales reps seems to be talked about a lot amongst my peers for working ridiculous hours. Apparently he comes in an hour early and stays almost all night (mind you, this is unpaid labor as our company generally doesn’t authorize OT) Everyone keeps talking about what a great sales rep he is, praising him for his high work ethic. I can’t believe it. Eventually today I spoke up and said something along the lines of “it’s not very admirable IMO. It kind of sounds like he doesn’t have much of a life outside of work, and I’m not trying to knock him, I just don’t think this should met with as much praise”. Granted, he was one of the top salesmen in our cohort- but at what cost?

People almost looked at me funny when I mentioned I don’t even check work emails or calls after 5. I said “why would I?”
