Admin. Assistant here. Just had a wild ass call:
A custodian was out on surgery for 2 hernias and was in recovery for a while. He's set to come back to work tomorrow with accommodations. The main accommodation is, of course, to not lift over 25lbs (which, considering my mother had the same thing happen to her after lifting too much weight on a job, was more than likely the cause to begin with).
So, little old me just typing away and doing COVID tracking work and his manager calls up and starts giving an attitude. Dude is all types of annoyed and disgruntled and is slightly hinting that he wants a new employee to work in his place “for the time being” AKA get me a better worker so I can replace this guy ASAP. Just for context: managers within the system I work in (school district office) have NO say in whether or not an employee can get an accommodation, and a good majority of the requests are passed through to make working easier on those with disabilities/post surgery/post pregnancy/etc. All accommodations go through my supervisor who is the director of operations in the health benefits department. But this guy didn't give a shit.
I ask if he (the employee) is asking for any other accommodations.
“I'm not asking for accommodations. I'm asking for someone to do his work.”
me: “Yes, I know. I was asking about the employee.”
“…”
me: “So, are you asking about accommodations?”
*starts going off about how he wouldn't have someone to lift 25lbs or more of materials in one go*
me: “In this case, the work would be a bit slower, but if he is able to move things in smaller amounts and possibly with someone assisting he should-“
*starts citing some fake shit in the employee's handbook and insists that this custodian job must be filled by someone who can lift 25lbs or more, or they will have to be replaced*
me: “You would not be able to make that call. But, I can gladly give you the contact info to the director so that she can give your employee his accommodations, and you can both discuss who will be assisting him from now on.”
He needs time to heal you troglodyte, stfu and let this man live.
TL;DR Manager asshole thinks he's hot shit and can control whether his employee gets accommodations after a hernia surgery, while also planning to fire him. Little does he know, my supervisor/the director of health benefits is the one who makes the call and will gladly give him accommodations.
