damned if i do, damned if i dont

due to my OF being attached to this account, i wont post any details except what i do. Im an equipment mechanic that repairs pharma equipment. Also i feel like i have to mention im on my phone Since the day i started the biggest complaint is that there is no training here, as you can imagine a million dollar peice of calibrated machinery isnt exactly a simple piece of equipment. However even though im not a millwright or mechanic by trade im smart enough to repair things and keep going enough that i still have my job, besides i wasnt hired to be a mechanic. Fast forward to about a month ago, im troubleshooting a piece of equipment. Since the day i started the biggest complaint is that there is no training here, as you can imagine a million dollar peice of calibrated machinery isnt exactly a simple piece of equipment. However even though im not a millwright or mechanic by trade im smart enough to repair things and keep going enough that i still have my job, besides i wasnt hired to be a mechanic.

Fast forward to about a month ago, im troubleshooting a piece of equipment. Think ive determined the problem, turns out it was the wrong problem, i used the test equipment wrong, you guessed it, no training. I say this to bossman and he tells me to get on the computer and train myself. We are always short guys here so there isnt much down time to self train, pretty much anything has to be assigned seperate time to complete.

Jump to yesterday, guess who finally had a minute to try and learn something. In our shop we have a lathe and a mill, so if you know how, you can fabricate anything you like. Well the day previous one of my co-workers was giving me a rundown on the lathe to teach me how to make a nut. (Okay admittedly it was an axle nut for my quad but no one needed to know that.) When he taught me though, he did everything himself, im a hands on learner. While the part he showed me worked i wanted to make a flange on it for more surface contact, as well as make sure i could do it myself. so i took it upon myself, in spare time between calls, to make a new one.

Right near the end my manager comes in and asks what im doing. I tell him the truth, X helped me make a part yesterday but he did it himself, i have some time right now and i wanted to see if i could do it myself. Well bossman loses his mind, says there is time for training but this isnt it and on and on how there is so much to do (there isnt, we have a task board, i know what there is to do if i dont have calls.) He says if i want training it has to be scheduled, meanwhile ive been begging for training and upgrade courses since day one.

Ironically after it was all said and done, i made my part nearly perfect for what i wanted, i accidentally trained myself how to make a part that normally costs the company hundreds if not thousands of dollars to order. But hey, we dont have time for this, so i guess he will never know that we dont have to order them and he will never know that in an hour i can make one instead of waiting days to order one. If he only knew that training saved time and added value.
