Deducting pay out of checks if system count is a little off as if we’re stealing? System barely works. Is this legal?

If you’ve ever worked retail at a register you know the system fucks up. (in my case in every 1/10 or so sales because the equipment is ancient) So it’s my fifth day of work here, I was trained briefly at best, but the job is easy so I grasped it fast. Problem is, even on a perfect day of work there’s discrepancies in the system(Not only for me). So now the glorified grunts with managerial status have conjured this up. Saying if there’s any short in the system it comes out of our paycheck as if we’re not working or something! They know we’re not stealing obviously, there’s cameras everywhere… I’ve never been one for fuckery, so I laughed when presented with this and opposed but turns out, of course, I was the only one. Long story short is this dumb shit even legal?
