I was working for a popular Australian burger chain a few years back. I was one of the older staff (ages 16-25 age demographic)I was 21 and most of my co workers were around 16-19. Most of the people at the table are not to relevant to the story except a junior girl who I'll just name as JG.
I was sitting at our booth table with a few of the other employees discussing about how it sucked that the law changed about weekend overtime. Luckily this brought up wages and we all sat around the table talking about our pay, this is when JG spoke up about her pay. Now in Aus your pay goes up by a $1 or so until you hit 21 , but the amount she told us was just down right illegal not only in my state but the whole country from what I'm aware of. She got paid a full $13 less then me, doing the same job (I also only made a few extra dollars above minimum wage). After talking to her a little more I found out while she was born here her parents came here and knew little about what she should be looking out for. I asked her to show me a pay slip if she was comfortable doing so and it was so sad at how much they were taking advantage of this poor girl I called up my own mother who works in payroll management to sit down with JG and teach her everything she taught me.
