Disincentivizing covid testing

Because we have many employees out sick right now and several have tested positive for covid, my employer issued a statement that anyone experiencing symptoms should test and report results to HR. If the test is positive, you must follow CDC recommendations and quarantine for five days if vaccinated, ten days if not vaccinated. If approved by your manager, and if you’re not too sick, you may work remotely if your job can be done remotely. If you aren’t able to work remotely, you must use your sick and vacation time to cover the quarantine. Half our employees are just going to work sick.

We get five sick days a year and start employment with ten days of vacation.

Some employees are openly announcing they have no intention of testing.

I have a coworker who is on the donor list for a new kidney. She works part time because she spends a few days a week on dialysis. If she caught covid and a kidney became available it would be devastating.

I have lost so much faith in people. One of the employees boldly telling everyone she will not be testing is doing so because she’s going on vacation outside of the country next week. How fucking selfish.

And how shortsighted and backwards of my employer. We just wrapped up a big event that is 100% the cause of this spread. We were all together at the event for about a week (with thousands of attendees).

My job feels hazardous at this point. I worked my ass off at the event, exposing myself to covid, to return to multiple cases and be told I’ll be penalized for testing positive.

We have learned nothing.
