EFL= English as a Foreign Language (basically teaching foreigners how to speak English).
I live in a small country where pre-covid, the EFL industry was quite prominent. Students used to come here and make a holiday out of their course because of the sun and the beaches, and they pay top dollar for it too. Teachers were poorly paid, and although many of us are professionally trained, everyone treats us (and pays us) like glorified babysitters for drunk teens on holiday. Nevertheless, it was a fun job where we met people from different countries, even though the responsibilities outweigh the salary.
Covid hit, and many schools closed down. Some schools refused monetary government assistance for their employees, and many of my teacher friends ended up not getting a salary for months, they had to live in their car. Now that covid has blown over where I live, no one wants to work in EFL anymore because covid exposed the industry for what it really is- a business and a farce. I was talking to one of the managers the other day who was telling me about her salary, and I was appalled when she told me how little she made.
