I apologize in advance, this is gonna be long and filled with grammar mistakes probably.
Some background, I (20 ftm) work in a meat department in a family owned store. I have worked in this departement for 6ish months, but I've worked in the actual store for almost a year now. I started out as a grinder, which is the 12-8 shift. I hate late shifts, I'm more of a morning shift person. 9-5 person walked out during a shift and left clean up for the closing manager. This is after the previous 9-5 person left after he put his 2 weeks in. For about 3 weeks, it's just me and the opener. I was getting out 2 hours late on a regular basis because no one would stop a d help when I would ask.
“Why isn't sausage getting done? Why are you getting out so late? The person who worked here for 13 years can what you are doing and get out early, you know. You need to hurry up or we're gonna have to take some disciplinary action.”
I hated the constant nagging, so I got faster. They end up hiring two new people. Both of them know how to cut, so I stay in my position. One of them ended up walking out on his shift as well, so I had to train someone new. I finally got the 9-5 shift! Everything's good until, wait for it… The new grinder quits two weeks later.
So to summarize, in the 6 months I have been here, 4 people quit. 2 of those people walked out of a shift, and I actually forgot about teo peoe who didn't get through the training process. That's 6 people in 6 months. Now onto my current situation.
Normally, there are 4 people who work in the meat department. During meat sales, which draw people from across the state, we have an extra 2 or 3 people to help. We also normally have 2 people who close during meat sales so closing can be done later and faster.
There was this major racing thing in our town this week. And a major sporting event. And a meat sale. So you would think we would properly schedule that, right? No.
I was scheduled to close by myself DURING A MEAT SALE, DURING TWO MAJOR SPORTING EVENTS, ALL THREE OF WHICH DRAW PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE STATE.
I didn't even have help filling the meat counter. I was getting yelled at constantly by managers, the owner, and customers for not keeping up. No help whatsoever. I hate it. I am essentially doing 3 peoples jobs, for $13 an hour. I would have gotten out 3 hours late last night if a manager I absolutely love didn't help me with dishes. I was scheduled to work 6 days this week, and didn't have help closing for 3 of those days. I hate is so much here it sucks and they refuse to give me a raise because ” we need to make sure you are comfortable in the position you are at before we consider those things.”
I will happily elaborate anything. Ask anything you want. Advice wanted/needed
