Effort vs. Results – Your effort doesn’t matter

I will start by saying I am a manager in manufacturing. I have 4 supervisors who report to me and 125 employees who report to them across 2 shifts. I do everything I can to be a good boss and leader. I say good morning to all employees on both shifts nearly every day. I am on site, 5:30 am – 5:45 PM every day except Tuesday when I leave at 5 to take my daughter to her tumbling class. I try my best to explain to all employees what decisions I am making and why I am making them. I have a personal, 1 on 1 conversation with employees at least once a week about something other than work. I try hard to be compassionate, but still get the job done for the company. That being said, we have really struggled over the last year to hit our financial results.

My boss, who is the plant manager, has been taking a ton of heat for the financial misses. He transfers that heat on to me. That is the extent of his effort. He comes in between 8:30 – 9:00 AM (after I have been working my butt off for 3 hours) and tells me how terrible everything is. He points out all the problems and then goes and sits in his office and watches videos on his phone. He sits in the bathroom and watches videos on his phone. He does nothing more than field some phone calls from customers and corporate offices and then leaves at 4:30 pm.

My performance review for 2021 says “needs improvement” and that “my effort does not matter if the results are not there.” Nothing more infuriating than being told by someone who puts in almost zero effort, that your effort does not matter. I was moved to my current location by my company and had to sign a 2 year contract that expires in July. I am literally counting down the days until I can tell this guy I quit.
