Employer has begun, as of this morning, to require time clock usage. I’m a salaried employee.

My employer this morning lets me know that I am to punch in and out of the time clock system from now on. We are a small company where this wasn't a thing until this morning. There was 0 previous communication before this change over. No notice, no prompts. I am a salaried employee. I haven't punched into a job since the pandemic started. Can someone explain to me the point of this? Is this even legal? (I'm in NY) is this grounds for renegotiating my salary? Thanks.
