When I was 16, I started working at a family-owned restaurant as a waitress where I made a little above minimum wage. The family collected all my tips, and I never saw a cent. I did not realize it then, but they broke the law. Diners would tip 20-30% on my excellent service as I worked there loyally for years. I enjoyed working for them as the family was always kind to me despite the low pay. It wasn't until I got another job making tips (up to $100 per shift, and that was just coffee) that I realized how much money was stolen from me. Even then, I just shrugged it off as a mistake from the past, thinking nothing could be done legally despite them breaking state laws.
Unfortunately, I have to find a summer job, and there are few options. My parents are pushing me to contact this restaurant where they always need help. I am considering chatting with the manager about how tips will work this time but don't know how hard I should push about the illegality of holding them. I admit that I struggle to stand up for myself and am not one to seek out confrontation actively.
