Employers abusing minors and why they need to be taught to stand up for themselves

I was just reminded of this. I’m 23 now, but was 16 at the time. I worked at the Brown Derby and was a back of the house employee. One time I was scheduled a double (11-13 hours) on a day I needed to call off. I don’t remember why but I asked my coworker (also a minor, usually worked as a hostess, but was trained in my area) to cover me and she agreed. Later in the day the front manger called me into the office and chastised me because minors can’t work doubles. I just stared at her speechless for a minute and then yelled “I am a minor!” She stared back at me speechless and was like oh I didn’t know that, that’s not good he (my manager) shouldn’t be doing that. I had school the next morning and this was just fun money for me. But I was too scared to push back.
