“Every worker thinks they should be paid more”

Another memory of HERE Technologies: They did an employee survey, then asked for volunteers to be on committees that would suggest ways to address the issues that the survey brought to light. Although volunteering at work has never been my thing, I signed up for the committee one of whose assigned issues was salary. The director chairing that committee was ready to ignore that item on the grounds that we couldn't do anything about it; when I pressed the matter, she sourly agreed to schedule a meeting between the committee and some compensation people from HR. Nothing useful was said in that meeting or came from it – but I distinctly recall that one of the first things HR said was, “Every worker thinks they should be paid more.” A few years later, I left the company to be paid more.
