“Exceeds Expectations” option removed from annual self-assessment

I’ve been with the same firm for 3 years, and as well all know, this comes with the dreaded annual performance review. In the past, we’ve been able to give ourselves up to five “stars” based on how well we think we meet or exceed expectations (or fall short). Not this year. We went straight from 5 options to 2. You either need improvement, or meet expectations. It’s really rubbing me the wrong way. It’s a blatant tactic to not have anyone “deserve” a raise on paper. So frustrating. How do your performance reviews work?
