“Family oriented workspace”

I graduated fairly recently from an accredited two year college and passed my boards to become a licensed veterinary technician. (In my field that makes you more valuable so to speak which means better pay.) The veterinary clinic I did my clinical at requests an interview with me for a job opening as one of their technicians because they thought I would be a good fit for the job. I was very open and frank with them on the phone before scheduling the interview that I needed to be paid competitively because I will be working full time while my husband is in school full time, like he did for me. They said that was awesome, and they were on board. Fast forward to our in person interview and they say that they are excited for me work there, etc etc and that I’m hired essentially. I was like that’s great but respectfully we haven’t discussed pay yet. They basically became super uncomfortable and said that we did on the phone. I politely corrected them and said we discussed competitive pay but not how much I would be making. They give me this bullshit vague answer about how I needed to work my way up to a larger salary which would come in time. So “working my way up” would be starting at 9 dollars an hour. 9 dollars. An hour. No benefits or PTO, or vacation or sick days till almost TWO YEARS IN. Family workspace??? Do you hate your family?? Lol!
