You might have seen my previous post talking about my last job: https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/vra902/my_job_claims_to_be_like_a_family/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Point is, I thought I found a great job! Working as a go-between for donors and non-profits, working to retain them…basically sales but less scummy. Best part, I was told it was about 60-100k a year, depending on retention rates. 11-6 shift.
But I'm pretty sure I'm deep in an MLM scam that runs back years and I have no idea what to do. I'm at a loss for words really.
First red flag, I don't get a response for a week after my second interview. No response to texts. I finally get a text saying they tried to call me to offer a fundraising coordinator position. Weird, because I hadn't seen anything on missed calls or in my email.
Anyway, second red flag- I show up for my first day and it feels like a frat house- their “meeting room” where they meet donors is almost completely empty except for a speaker blaring pop at 8:30 AM. The walls are filled with tacky inspirational posters and the entire office seems…thrown together. I'm then told that the job consists of going to random locations, standing outside for six hours, and the highest pay in the office (gleaned from squeezing it out of everyone I could talk to) is around 2k a MONTH. Not excepting the leaders, who supposedly make six figures…confusing considering we supposedly get paid on how many donors we get?
Anyway, I'm then told I have to work from 8:30-7pm. Excuse me? Nearly an 11 hour shift? Standing in the summer heat and harassing passerby? I was never told there would be that kind of activity, or I would have never accepted due to previous health conditions. Everyone at the office has been there for 6 months or less and has miraculously been promoted extremely quickly. Perks if you reach upper levels are apparently a winter retreat to exotic locations, and your own office branch?
But it honestly gets worse. I tracked this down through LinkedIn and found several companies with eerily similar names, exact same work, and exact same websites (at least on my phone). I honestly don't know what to do. Is the money even going to non-profits?
TLDR: Job lied to me in interview and now has the most scammy practices I can possibly imagine.
