I'm not familiar with this subreddit but my boyfriend suggested I share my story partly because I can appreciate the humor of the situation and partly because he thinks it might help cheer me up.
I've been a cocktail waitress for six years now and I started working at this particular bar almost a year ago when they had just reopened after being closed for a year and a half due to COVID. I was a part of their first wave of hires and because I had a good amount of craft cocktailing experience I was quickly made a bartender despite my lack of actual bartending experience. The craft cocktail industry in the Midwest is very much a “boys club” and it's still very hard to cross the ranks from cocktail server to bartender. I've dealt with all sort of harassment from guests groping me to coworkers telling me to “show them [my] boobs” so I could get my server report signed and for the most part to survive in this industry I've used humor as a coping mechanism. I probably wouldn't still *be* in this industry if I was easily offended.
Anyways to sum it up one of the older “more experienced” bartenders obviously resented that I was rising the ranks but partly that was just because I was working harder then him for eg I was coming in on my days off to clean the private party room and help decorate for the holiday pop ups. Things really started to come to a head because the barback (an older gentleman) was blatantly ignoring me when I asked him for anything and just being generally disrespectful despite the fact that as a barback his job is literally to help the bartenders. All the cocktail waitresses had issues with these men but the GM continuously just made excuses for them and after the holidays they reduced my bartending shifts to one day a week.
I have been previously written up for being late on a shift but the aforementioned bartender has been drunk on the job multiple times (including hitting two of the other employees cars including the GM) and still hasn't been fired nor had his bartending shifts reduced. I was even told not to come in to my shift the next day as a form of punishment. The GM himself has even crossed the line of professionalism many times including drinking with the staff off hours and making it seem like we could confide in him.
Last night I was waiting for my ride and I started doodling on the server checklist and I jokingly asked the bar manager if I should draw a picture of a penis and he said, I quote, “only if it's a really veiny one.” I proceeded to doodle the “offensive” picture in question and then promptly scribbled it out. Today I was fired. Can't wait to explain this to unemployment.
