I was working at a law firm for the past 2 months, today I get to the office and they tell me I am being let go, along four others.
I ask if I've done anything wrong, If the two lawyers I work directly under complained about me, anything. They tell me no, I've done everything just right, completed all work as needed, but they needed someone with more experience. Experience?? It's an entry level job, I am not even out of college yet they pay me the national minimum. And it's not like it's my first job, I've had two other internships before, but in smaller firms.
Sure, I had to learn to use the system, and of course I made mistakes in the beginning, but isn't that to be expected from anyone starting out a new job? Of someone still a student? Two months in, and I was working just fine, did everything asked of me with time to spare, stayed late sometimes, even if I had to get to my classes.
I asked the two lawyers I worked under, they told me I was indeed working fine. One even offered to ask around if anyone she knows was looking for an intern, said she was sad I was being let go. They both taught me a lot, and for that I am grateful, but…
I just don't get it. What am I meant to do, if even entry level jobs need experience? How can I get experience unless they teach me, give me a chance to learn? Do they want a full lawyer for the salary of an intern or something?
This is in Brazil, btw
