So this was originally supposed to be an Indeed review that got rejected for whatever reason, but I was hired 2 weeks ago as a bookkeeper for a family-owned company called AA Sign Image that basically installs custom signs for businesses. Originally, I took the job as a means to make quick cash because I was let go from a temp assignment weeks prior and I went in knowing that the company didn’t offer any benefits (nor did they offer direct deposit) because I won’t be around for long anyways.
Within the first week, I was getting comments about whether I was Chinese and if I understood Spanish, which started to make me uncomfortable because I felt like my ethnicity was assumed based off my “Asian” features and it was being gauged whether they can talk shit around me in Spanish if I didn’t understand it at all.
Then on the Friday of my first week, the male business owner decided to make some comment about being “surprised by Asians on YouTube knowing how to speak Spanish when their eyes are small” while he did the racist “slant-eyed” gesture as if that was a perfectly appropriate thing to do? After that incident I immediately began applying elsewhere in secret and as of yesterday morning, I was handed my final check just as I walked in and told that it wasn’t going to work out because of my “lack of experience.”
I happily left, but I’m still not sure if they fired me due to me being relatively quiet in the office (which was apparently a pressing issue for some managers in my past jobs) or if I was unable to resolve their messy financial situation asap. Whatever the case, this was my actual first time experiencing some bs like this and it’s so bizarre to me that racist remarks towards Asians in general aren’t usually treated as offensive and this ignorant shit needs to end!
