I'll do my best to be brief here.
I am a field engineer and do Electrical and mechanical work on power plants.
I was working for a company I liked who compensated me well and had good benefits. They sold the business to a POS corporation ( they are mostly pos's )
Who cut everyone's benefits , cut overtime , removed bonuses , took people out of their comfort zones and just all around made the place miserable to work. So I looked around and got another job elsewhere for more money better benefits etc.
Starting at the new place felt weird. The underlying feeling during interviewing was good but it all changed on day one.
I was working along side an engineer who despite their “experience” really didn't know what they were doing at all.
So me being me I called them out for it every single time. My perogitive is wasted time is unacceptable so I say cut the bad part out immediately and move on.
Well this gentleman didn't care for my opinions at all and went so far as to threaten my employment and so on.
The last straw was due to a day off work. I requested a day off a month in advance , not really to take the day off but to simply be home by 5-6 pm on a particular day. We got into an argument because he was trying to deny my day off and claimed that I never requested the day off , I immediately screenshot my request off which included his reply to the initial request saying yes from my email at which point he begrudgingly said I could be home at a respectable time that day ( gee thanks bro )
It's important to add that this gentleman is butt buddies w the operations manager. It will be clear why that's important in the next paragraph.
So for the next two weeks after this occured they acted strange , didn't send me my work emails or update my on the projects and such , so I knew something was wrong. I was not surprised when they called and let me go over the phone lol. They cited false accusations as the reason for letting me go when in reality it was because of politics and the operations guy being friendly with this moron engineer. It was a waste of my time and an awful experience. It may not sound like much but I have a lot of industry contacts and am well known in the north east for my experience and professionalism so needless to say they will not be getting any positive references from me and in fact I am sure due to simply sharing this with some of the people I know in high places that it will in fact likely make it harder for them to do business in the north east. I can elaborate on any of this if anyone wants to pm me.
Now to the satisfying part of the story.
I've been out of work for four weeks and have had twenty plus offers. I received what I consider an amazing offer from a place I have worked for as a consultant before and know the owner and most of the engineers in the place as well. They money is fifteen percent more than the place which let me go paid , the benefits are better , it'll open doors for me down the road , I am also extremely familiar with the product the sell and maintain as I have worked on their products before so I will not have to learn a whole new control scheme or anything like that.
I guess my point in the end is if a place fires you direct your frustration at bettering yourself to spite them. And don't let it get you down , I consider the few times in my life I've been fired to be a blessing in disguise.
I don't want to sound arrogant at all but I'm at the point now where I don't need to work very hard to get good job offers so I'm extremely picky about where I'll go and the details of it.
Also this is somewhat off topic but when I get offers from places which are either low wages or trash health insurance I will literally stop the interview and explain that I nor anyone should be offered such laughably bad pay and benefits and that if they want to actually attract smart skilled employees they need to act like they even want to attract people like that by having good pay and benefits. I actively make it clear to the places I speak to that there is no way anyone smart will be interested at the rate they are offering and they should really reconsider their salary etc if they have any hopes of attracting good reliable employees.
Just because I make good money and have great benefits doesn't mean I don't remember what it was like having a catastrophic plan from my first few jobs and working for wages which barely if even pay the bills.
While they prob don't listen to me most of the time I think it's important to tell the places how awful their offers often are. That they are offering entry level wages for an engineering position.
I'm not one of those fuck you got mine kinda people. I consider this , if lower skill workers get paid far more it helps them and it ultimately raises my wages as well. We all should be ( as a species) working to better each other's situation and It may make no difference but I refuse shit offers and always say something. It might not Matter but it could just get the next person more money and that makes me happy.
Ok rant over and I'll add
Tldr: left job after five years for another job , new job peer clashed w me regularly and I was let go only to get an offer four weeks later at 20% more from another place.
Basically in the end my opinion is , you don't like me ? Don't like me telling you that you don't know what you are doing? Fuck you again and go ahead fire me , you are doing me a favor.
So thanks to my previous job , the simple-minded engineer and operations guy for doing me the favor of firing me so I could find a job working for intelligent and logical people.
Rant over
