Follow-up: Backing up YOUR creations

Can someone who has an IT background or technical skills advise the group on how the pawns, I mean employees can hold onto the stuff we created without the company keeping it after firing us? Is there something specific they put in the employee handbook or paperwork saying that we can't back our stuff up? If I'm fired, so are my materials! My idiot ex-coworker has his income tax statements on his personal drive. It's on the server and everyone can click on eachother's names. I guess he's too cheap to store that on his own computer? I guess his tax documents are company property? He's an engineer, it shows how intelligent he is.
