This is a weird vent/rant that I want opinions on.
I work as an engineer in Colorado. On 2/4/22, I gave my notice that I would resign on 3/11/22. I’m pretty junior, but my position relies on a lot of built knowledge so I wanted to give my coworkers enough time to learn my job and not be buried when I left.
I told management, I was wished well, we agreed on the date and moved on.
I trained my successor, and they’re now fully capable. Our plan was for this to happen and for me to become a knowledge bank for the final weeks.
Today, at noon, my direct supervisor calls me and says my resignation date has been moved forward to today. I ask if he’s firing me. He says “no, this is not a lay off.” I responded “well, I’m not resigning so, by definition, you’re laying me off. That’s fine, but I want that clear so I can go file for unemployment.” (My new job doesn’t start for a while.
He suggests I call the president of our small company who hired me. I did. He said my output was lower recently (I’ve spent 4-5hrs per day training my replacement, naturally I would be less productive) and said the company didn’t want to pay my wages for 2 more weeks.
I told him I would not resign and he would have to fire me.
At 3pm, I receive a call from my supervisor telling me that my original resignation date stands and that I should come into work tomorrow.
My company policy is to give warnings and notice in the event of a firing and that a manager is not allowed to force a resignation.
The president tried to skate that and was caught by HR of our parent company.
My bi-monthly salary is 2500 gross. This was all to save, at max, 3200. What a ridiculous company. I’ve never doubted my decision to leave as I’ll make more doing much cooler work, but I fully plan on collecting my paychecks and walking away with as much contempt as I can manage on the 11th.
Just a reminder, they don’t care—you’re just a number.
