Ok, hear me out – cause I want some advice on how to be a good boss when I leave University (I’m 31 currently). I’ve stuck my “plan” below, we get free healthcare in the UK and 28 days paid holiday, but would love feedback and suggestions on how to give a good/wholesome working environment.
I live in the UK and I’m about to do a Masters in photography. When I graduate, I’m looking at moving to Manchester, where the cost of living is lower than London, and setting up a Studio (a franchise of a larger photography studio company).
Our minimum wage here is called the “National Living Wage” – ironic, cause people can’t afford to live on it – and is £9.50 ($11.72) an hour. The Apprentice wage is £4.81 ($5.93) an hour…disgusting right?
Anyway, I’m all about helping people – I live for it, and I hate the corporate life. I’m thinking of offering an apprenticeship for a receptionist at £11 per hour ($13.57) going up to £13 per hour ($16.04) after finishing.
I’d get an experienced sales person in and have a “shared commission” system, so the 2 employees would get a cut of the sales.
Opening hours, I’m thinking, would be from 11am until 6pm – giving them the chance to actually get a decent sleep, and time in the evening.
Naturally, when the office is closed, I’d give free studio usage to the staff – I know how expensive that can be to hire!
Thanks for reading my wall of text 🙂
