I have a fairly good union job making about 70k/year and barely able to provide for my family. We cannot afford housing. I've been working four 10 hour days since the start of the pandemic, with Friday being my regular day off (RDO).
My wife recently went back to work after having been laid off at the start of the pandemic. Because of our children's schedule she has to work Saturday and Sunday, leaving our only family day Fridays.
The company I work for just released a statement that we will be returning to the old schedule of 9/80. The 9/80 schedule is so fucking bonkers and all the workers are fucking pissed about the change. Essentially, we will be working four 9 hour days, Monday through Thursday, with a 3 day weekend. Then we would work four 9 hour days, then an 8 hour day and a two day weekend.
This makes no fucking sense!
I'm pissed because I miss the only fucking day I have with my wife. There's a few people that have 2+ hour commutes into work and their not being compensated for the fact that gas prices have doubled since we switched to the new schedule.
I'm fucking done. I don't want to work and I'm fucking tired of living in a society that expects me to “earn a living.”
I'm fucking burnt out from talking to the Union and encouraging my coworkers to do so all day. The solidarity that's come out of this is really uplifting, but then there's the crash that comes with the reality of being stuck in this fucking dead end job with no other opportunities that will provide anything close to these fucking scraps.
When are we going to do something about this fucked up society, because I fucking hate it here.
