This happened over a phone call for logistic reasons – I really wanted to get it over with asap. So I rang my boss and basically said I’m giving notice and I’ll be following up with an official letter. I kept it blunt because I figured it was the most professional way to do it. Little did I know they would respond with a big laugh that went on for 20 seconds or so, only to be followed up with “okay then.”
I was kind of shocked at the unprofessional response and stumbled over the next few bits of my speech. The rest of the call was relatively normal but I think the laugh really validated my decision to leave. I don’t think there is any point trying to explain this incident in my exit interview without burning bridges – on to better things!
