I just need to get it off my chest.
I was very excited to start my job after graduating. I worked hard for my degree and was hopeful that I was on the right path. Turns out, I wasn’t.
The company had so many red flags and now I’m just realizing them. First, the president of the company was very, very abrasive. He tries so hard to be this “cool and relaxed” type of guy but he’s such a hard ass. I confided to him about a health issues that has been going on and subsequently, made me miss a week of work (I was puking every day multiple times) and he told me, “Have you tried going vegan?”
Second, they call themselves a “family”. That’s just a huge red flag in of itself. The work environment was awful and toxic. As a women, my field is very men dominated. I expect I will have to deal with sexism at one point. But the way the men at the office treated women employees was bad. For one, my supervisor told me he wasn’t comfortable talking to me about my performance but he has no problem joking and laughing and talking to the other entry-level who was a man. I like to wear dresses in the summer because it’s hot. But I would get a comment every now and then about “why don’t I wear pants?” or creepy old guy eyeing me up and down. One of the senior staff was so rude and treated a women staff like a child every time he talked to her. He treated her as if she wasn’t his equal. Same with my supervisor to me. He didn’t like it when I worked from home and told me so. I asked him if it was a trust issue and he said no. Then what is it? He would treat me like he was babysitting me.
Third, everybody there was pretty much expected to work major unpaid overtime. Like 50-60+ hours a week was normal. And my supervisor was one of the people who worked on average 60 hours a week.
Fourth, the training. With entry-levels, there should be an understanding that a learning curve will happen. Apparently, I wasn’t fast enough to get over my learning curve and was let go because of that. My supervisor was expected to train me while he worked 60+ hours a week so I never got trained properly. His training sucked regardless of how much time he had. He acted like I was a nuance whenever I had a question. On top of all the reasons above as to how he treated me, I was a little relieved to not having to work there any longer.
Sorry for the rant. It’s just hard coming into a job out of college and being expected to flawlessly work into the company. It’s had a huge negative impact on my confidence levels.
Oh yeah, they also fired me during the holiday season. Lol
