Getting my first “real” job this summer. How can I protect myself?

So I'm a college student and up until this point, I've only done under the table jobs like cleaning houses and babysitting where I was paid in cash. I want to get a “real” job over summer break so I have something to put on my resume and it doesn't look like I've never worked before. I've basically been an “independent contractor” of sorts up until this point where I pretty much negotiated my own wages and didn't have a boss. Obviously that'll change working at a regular business. I'm really quiet and shy so I'm really bad at standing up for myself and I don't want to get taken advantage of by an employer. Fortunately I still live with my parents (I love them they're amazing) so it's not a life or death thing, but I want to use this as a way to build up my confidence before…

Does anyone have any tips or things they wish they knew when they got their first job? I'm not entirely sure what my rights are or where to find them (I live in Ohio, USA if it helps). Are there things employers usually try to get away with with young people thinking we don't know? I'd really hate to realize years later “wait a minute, that wasn't legal but I didn't know any better”. Thanks ‍️
