Given a warning for following procedure

This happened a while back but always bothered me. I used to work in retail and my job was code checking, basically this means each day I had to check a different aisle for products that were nearing expiry. The training was I wasn’t allowed to check every single product in the line (I was told off for being too thorough in the past) but rather a sample, so the first product one from the middle and one from the back. That means I never checked 100% of products in a line so there could be missed out of codes. Obviously for refrigerated items every product was checked but I just did dry goods. One day a customer bought a box of biscuits that were expired and put in a nasty complaint on socials . I got called into the office for a warning wanting me to sign an admission…

One day a customer bought a box of biscuits that were expired and put in a nasty complaint on socials . I got called into the office for a warning wanting me to sign an admission of guilt that it was my fault and I would do better.

I got the impression management were copping heat for it and needed a scapegoat.

I told them I would only sign that I was following procedure which they weren’t happy about. In the end they let it go as I kept insisting “I was following my training” and would they like me to check every item moving forward, which obviously they wouldnt as it would take more time.

Just always really bothered me. So glad I left retail
