I was laid off along with thousands of my fellow co-workers from my previous job in late May. Thankfully (or so I thought), I was recruited by another company shortly after. Throughout my interviews with this company, I inquired about their training and they told me explicitly that I would be trained and given the proper assistance. Unfortunately, this has not come to fruition. I’m almost a month in at the new job at this point and I have not been trained at all. My first day consisted of HR sending me a slide deck to look over and that’s it.
Since being hired, I’m in meetings all day where I just listen in and try to understand what is going on. The job itself is pretty technical and I don’t have prior experience in this field (something that the company knew when hiring me). I was supposed to be assigned a mentor to assist me, but the person that’s supposed to be my mentor just sent me some videos which I have watched but do not really apply to what we are doing currently.
I have brought my concerns about not being trained and not being able to meaningfully contribute due to this to my manager and teammates, but I’ve been reassured that this is the way things are and that I’ll grasp things eventually. I’m honestly really anxious and scared because I do not see myself “eventually grasping it”.
I’m considering looking for another job, but I’m worried I’ll have difficulties with that since I literally just started working at this place a month ago.
Can someone please give me some advice on what they would do under these circumstances? I ask my co-workers questions all the time and I try to absorb things as much as possible, but this swim or sink experience is just destroying me.
