Asked for more money last week. A little relevant information is I work as a mechanic in Southern California. The law for us is we’re required to be paid x2 minimum wage unless our employer provides tools. I have tools however messed up big time and got a dui 3 years back. I had a really good job at the dealership but that’s long over. I’ve been working at small independent shops and it sucks. The owners are all older boomer generation people who are completely out of touch with the times. My most recent job I left another shop to work here and they ended up giving me a $2 pay cut. Straight up lied to my face and told me they’d start me at $20 (due to my license situation) and after 90 days we can talk for real. I get my first check and it says $18 a hour. I stuck it out and tried to be a hard worker in hopes they’d make it right. I ended up getting frustrated and just asking for more money. I mentioned I’m supposed to be making more since I own at least 10k in tools. She tried to bullshit me saying I’d need ase certifications to receive that pay to which I responded “people with all their ases are making in the $30 range. The laws very clear here”. From that point onward I knew what was coming. On Friday after I finished the cars I had left the new shop foreman called me in and laid me off. Saying we’re too slow right now. Odd how his friend is starting on Monday. That shop has gone through a lot of good hard working mechanics in the past few months I think I might need to get in contact with them.
