Called my parents a while ago. My mother in particular is a VERY extreme far-right trump supporter and both my mom are fervent fanatical supporters of capitalism. For them, capitalism and corporations can do no wrong, ever. All bad press about ANY company they immediate claim is fake news or “that didn't happen”. They spend all day, almost everyday in their retirement watching One America News, Fox News, and far-right conspiracy theory stuff.
Shared with them the news that I heard that at a company in my area, somebody is trying to unionize it. Talked a bit about it, my parents are in disbelief why anyone would want a union at that company.
I comment “Unions in general are good, are the reason workers and employees have the rights, protections, and benefits they have. And the working conditions they enjoy were earned by the efforts of organized labor. The people there probably feel that they are experiencing poor or unjust working conditions, wage theft, or some other grievance that management is ignoring”.
My mother's responses:
“Unions are bad for business and are the reason your grandfather had to close his store.”
“Unions are FULL of bad awful, greedy people and unions are EVIL.”
“Unions are run by the mafia and the mexican cartels. UNIONS KILL AND MURDER PEOPLE jack1991s!”
“Anyone who joins a union is a servant of Satan!”
I make some comments that unions are just people organizing to demand fair working conditions. Parents refuse to listen.
My mother then says “Clearly you've been corrupted by those satanic liberal communists living in that blue state (Michigan). You ARE NOT welcome at our house. Don't call or contact us again. You are no longer my son.” Mom hangs up the phone, and blocks my number.
It's been quite some time now and it's become clear that she is serious. My dad passed away this year but I decided to send my mom a fathers day gift anyways for dad even though he is no longer with us. I simply sent something I knew my mom would enjoy. It was returned with a note “You are NOT our son anymore” written in my mom's handwriting.
TL;DR disowned by my parents for attempting to defend why workers at a company near me are trying to organize to form a union.
