Had a fire in apartment building and landlord won’t pay to clean out the smoke.

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I was hoping some of you knew anything about this. So I live in Chicago Illinois and my apartment building has 6 units. The basement units stove had a malfunction and caught on fire. Fire department came broke down doors got dogs out and everyone was safe. They put out the fire but there was a lot of smoke and the hallway now smells of smoke as well as the apartment above the fire. They have children and don't feel comfortable staying in the apartment because the smell is still bad for us to breath in. Our landlord is saying he doesn't have to do anything because it wasn't the apartment that had the fire. Is he legally required to have a cleaning business come and deep clean the apartment so it's safer to live in or…
