Last year I had to put my childhood cat down the morning of work. I was crying so hard that I had to go home for a little bit to recollect myself before going to work, so I ended up being around 30 minutes late. Immediately when I get in I get no sympathy from my manager. She asks how I’m going to make up the time. I said “Can you ask HR if they can put it under compassionate leave or comp time.” She did and they approved it. Later on she told me she didn’t think they would approve it because they don’t normally do that for pets. This is a rule to this day that they actually finalized a couple months ago.
Fast forward to today. Her family dog died last night. Yes I have sympathy cause I’m not a monster. I also have sympathy cause she was spamming the work group chat with pictures of the dog dying “a natural death.” Like bro I don’t want to see a dying dog at 8 o clock after work. Anyways, she ended up taking today off, and sent a text this morning that the dog died at 12:45 last night. So she got basically a whole night to collect herself and a whole day while I only got 30 minutes. Don’t worry I plan on leaving this job as soon as I can but I’m under a contract so for the time being I have to stay.
