If your feet hurt after an 8 hour work day or 40 hour work week. Be glad unions and the labour movement fought for an 8 hour work day/40 hour work week to be the norm and not a 10-16 hour work day with an unregulated amount of time in a week.
If you've ever had to work overtime, and have been compensated at 1.5x/2x pay Thank unions and the labour movement.
If you've never had to negotiate for your wage in any job and still earned above minimum wage. Thank unions and the labour movement.
If you're thankful for having paid time off, vacation pay, paid sick leave, pensions, OSHA and safety regulations thank unions and the labour movement.
If you're entitled to strike, advocate for yourself and your coworkers without being beaten, shot, hung or incarcerated thank unions and the labour movement.
If you have weekends off, thank unions and the labour movement.
If you're fortunate enough that you can't imagine what it would be like to work in a sweatshop, thank a union and the labour movement.
If you weren't forced to do child labour, thank unions and the labour movement.
When people get pissed off for having to spend $150 a month for union dues, I get it. It's hard making ends meet. Yet just in terms of what we pay for unions, our ability to negotiate and seek fair compensation is far greater than what it would be if we were divided. What we get financially from having a good union more than makes up the difference of those yearly union dues.
There is a reason why some of the biggest chains in the world such as Amazon, Walmart and Starbucks have such adamant union busting tactics, to the point they'll pay management bonuses for destroying attempts at unionization and go so far as to ban the use of the word “Labour union” in their internal messaging app that's required for work despite all of this being ILLEGAL in Western society.
Remember: We have these regulations because if it was still possible, we'd still be getting heavily exploited in all of these ways. We're far more powerful when we know our rights, exercise our rights and when we're united.
