Has anyone noticed the huge spike in tips being added to offset low wages?

I'm starting to notice a huge trend for casual and fast food companies asking for tips at the their establishments. I can't in my right mind support this practice because it's basically letting companies get off the hook for paying their employees a living wage and passing it on to the consumer. I feel guilty but at the same time I feel like it's their little loophole.
