Help / advice needed regarding former employer.

Hi guys, I'm a longtime browser and first time poster. This is a throwaway account I've created for this post. I have been working as a senior video editor at a production company based in Manchester UK for just over a year. In January, coming up to a years employment my manager and the company CEO informed my i would be taking a pay cut from £25,000 per annum to £22,000, as well as being demoted to a video editor role. I disagreed to this and did not sign any paperwork while i began job hunting. They all seemed really shocked when I handed in my notice. I had a few days remaining in PTO so decided to make use of it during my notice period. This is where it gets complicated – on my last day I had found out all other employees had been paid except for me.…

This is where it gets complicated – on my last day I had found out all other employees had been paid except for me.

I asked my manager what was going on and he stated because i still have company equipment (hard drives and a phone which stopped working) it was company policy not to pay until everything had been returned and checked.

I told him this was outrageous and potentially illegal. It got a bit messy and my company emails were turned off so i could not communicate with any other member of the team.

I should probably mention since my employment began we have been paid late (sometimes up to 2 weeks), as the company stated if they hadn't received payment from clients – then they could not pay employees.

Now I'm not sure how to proceed and am hoping there are smarter people than me on this sub who could help me navigate the muddy waters, and stick it best to my former employer.

Any help/ advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • I ultimatley decided I'd rather chance it alone and leave than stick it out with an employer who didn't give a shit about the emoloyees.
