Housing, rental and avoiding becoming a slum lord.

So, I'm an electrician by trade and work offshore making decent money. My daughter is training up to be a decorator / builder. So kicking around the idea of buying run down trashed places, investing in fixing them up between us and renting them out or selling them. I'm trying to think of a positive way to do this, especially on the rental side. Option A: keep rent low, so it's paying the mortgage off and enough in the pot for upkeep. Upside to this is someone gets decent low cost housing, I get a long term investment which will eventually pay for itself and hopefully not to much hastle. Option B: figure out some kind of rent to buy setup. I'm not sure on how I'd work that but the upside is it'd allow someone who otherwise couldn't, to buy a home and free up my equity sooner to…
