I work at a place with only 3 other locations. I was fine working there for months, I’ve never actually worked somewhere with a union before and it’s never bothered me. Until we got a new manager. He’s awful.
He asked for details about my personal life. This was because I called out because I had an extremely personal emergency with my friend and called out for two days. He asked me for details about that. Then proceeded to ask me about “if I was looking for a new job. Because someone saw you were. We don’t want people here who don’t want to be here.” Literally trying to interrogate me about my personal business on my day off and trying to pressure me into staying. He’s apparently done this to another coworker of mine (don’t have 100% confirmation on that but I wouldn’t doubt it).
I also called out once because my cat was sick. Asked for the name of which vet I was taking him to.
Our schedules, for one week, are released on Fridays and start on Monday. It makes it insanely difficult to make any minor plans for the future. It’s so inconvenient. I can rarely make any commitments to things because who knows if I’ll be scheduled to come in or not. The one time I put a early notice in for requested time off he didn’t give it to me.
He over staffs us lots of days so 1 or 2 people get sent home about an hour/ hour an a half early, which is detrimental when you’re a college student who doesn’t have time to work certain hours and you make minimum wage so you every hour counts. Which applies to majority of our staff.
Last week he didn’t put me on the schedule. Not a single hour.
I’m not super close to my coworkers so I don’t know all the details but it sounds like some of them have similar experiences. It seems like there’s a handful of us that get picked on by this manager. Since he’s started there I think there’s been 4 people who have quit.
I’m probably going to quit soon, so I don’t even think a union there would be beneficial for me. But I want to suggest it and maybe give pointers to my other coworkers who will be staying. Is there anything we can do to start one?
