How Effective is Calling after an Application?

I currently work at a non-descript retail store and they cut my hours right after I get a few months off from my college classes. They only have me working 4 hours this week, and 8 next week. So I'm trying to find another job. I put a couple dozen applications all over the place, the temp agency in town has nothing for me, and I get the occasional interview. Problem is, my mother-in-law is forcing me to call each place after a couple of days to follow up. I've been in the workforce since 2015 and had multiple jobs, and have been calling after each application since I first started working. NOT ONCE has calling to “follow up” has ever worked for me. They either call me first or they never get back to me at all, sometimes even hanging up on me when I follow up. Does following…
