How to approach a new job?

Hey! So I have an interview with a bulk store and I thought I would come here to get some advice as it’s my first retail job and I’m not sure how to approach it. The general consensus I’ve gotten from this community (from lurking lol hi) is that it’s best to keep your head down and minimum wage = minimum effort, but I’m wondering is it worth it to put in the extra effort to get a good reference for my next job? Would this make coworkers in a retail setting resent me for being a bootlicker? Is there a happy medium?? I’m pretty socially awkward and shy so I think this job will take a while for me to learn and get really good at, so I’m trying to prepare the best I can. I appreciate any advice especially from anyone who’s worked retail before!
