Edit to add to the title: *and also get paid for those hours
TL;DR: started job two days ago, it’s sketchy and I don’t want to work another shift and idk if I should resign over text, phone, or in person. 2 weeks notice or even a days notice is not happening.
I had my interview Tuesday, started my first shift on Wednesday training. I started feeling a bit skeptical about my compatibility with the position. Thursday completely confirmed that there’s no way I can do this and I can’t stomach another shift. I’m supposed to work in 9 hours.
I don’t want to go in just to tell the owner I’m resigning because he’s pretty manipulative (his training is literally teaching me how to not accept “no” as an answer) and I feel like he’s going to try and guilt me or get me to stay. My friend thinks I should just ghost them, my bf thinks I should resign in person. Is it sufficient to give him a call?
If anyone is curious why I’m quitting so quickly… Without getting too specific, there’s a ton of red flags and the job itself feels slimey. Owner was almost an hour late for my first day/training, he’s taking pics of my W-4 on his personal iPhone (to send to the tax guy or whatever), he and a worker were making transphobic comments about strangers… I ended up staying an extra hour on Thursday and he told me if I want to stay past my scheduled shift I need to clock out. Why would you tell me that at the end as I clock out when you were there the whole time and watched me work an extra hour without saying a word? Why would I want to stay off the clock? Also, they told me on the phone the position is $X/hr and 25% sales commission. In person they told me it’s $X/hr OR 25% sales commission, whichever is higher.
Don’t get me started on the entire business. It’s basically a front for some ridiculously expensive skincare line. I have a very specific script and was trained with methodologies in order to mentally manipulate strangers into coming in and buying this shit. They boldface told me to lie about certain things. The script was a photocopied photocopy with terrible spelling, circles and notes everywhere, and a completely incorrect ingredient for the product at the beginning of the pitch.
The job is standing at the front of the shop and trying to hand passers by skincare samples, then manipulating the poor schmucks that accepted a sample and are too uncomfortable being rude to come in and let us out product on their face. The price of the main product we’re trying to sell is hidden under a series of bullshit to make it seem like they’re getting a good deal. Ohh it’s $995, but we have a special where it’s $399. Oh I can also use my discount and give it to you for $299 plus this free product! We can go as low as $150, I feel like a fuckin car or mattress salesman.
