So, my husband works in a heavily specialized feild in “construction”. It's a lot of physical labor and travel. They have been trying to hire some extra grunt workers for the shop and can't seem to find or keep anyone. Why?
They starting rate is 9/hr. YUP. Hard labor, super specialized, and crazy travel hours all for the grand total of 9/hr. They say is a “trial period” and will go up to their normal 12/hr (still not enough) after 3 months. And to their credit, they do mean it. No bait and switch there, they just think you need to “prove your worth” before getting paid.
Even my husband after working there for 3 years only makes 15/hr.
The owners are super boomer types, think that people my age (millennials/gen z) are lazy and entitled. Think you should give up your life for the job and prove your worth to your job. They apparently were bitching about one kid turning down the job unless they paid him 12/hr starting out. They said “Why should he care; he lives at home. It's not like he needs the money.” Well maybe he doesn't WANT to live at home anymore and is trying to earn a living enough to move out. Not that that is any of your business.
My husband loves what he does, and I make plenty enough that he doesn't even need to work really so we make it work. Also, the place does have excellent benefits and PTO surprisingly. But that fucking mentality just gets him all worked up and hell come home ranting about it. Plus the fact that they are short staffed and really need help, but his bosses just wont budge.
