I am currently a Hy-Vee employee working in the produce department. As many people know the in-store food area called “the market grille” got changed into a food chain called “wahlburgers”. This is a chain run by the Wahlburg family. The Wahlburgers in my Hy-Vee since opening has failed incredibly by not updating the kitchen and hiring enough staff to run it properly. I have talked with the managers there and they say that they are not profiting from it since the prices are crazy (13 dollars for a single plain cheeseburger), long wait times because there isn’t enough staff to stay on top of the orders, and frequent refunds due to messy and dirty tables. Hy-Vee has decided that the best way to solve the issue of Wahlburgers failing by cutting every other departments pay roll significantly and promising hours to people that transfer to that department. We are only able to work the exact hours that we are scheduled and can only pick up hours in Wahlburgers. This makes it so employees are almost forced to work for Wahlburgers to get any hours. For the past 5 weeks, I have been scheduled 4 hours a week max. That is the average for every employee in my department right now. When I discuss working more or in a different area, they just tell me that I can move to Wahlburgers. I refuse to work for the place that has taken our hours. I don’t want to quit, but I don’t know what else to do since I can’t pay my bills with 4 hours a week. I feel that this should be something that is well known and to avoid eating there to support employees like me, because this issue is happening at every Hy-Vee that has a Wahlburgers.
