I have a really great job and I make decent money.
However, it's 100% due to luck. I've fallen forward for the last three years. I went from making $36k a year working 60-70 hours a week and having a dickhead manager to having a wonderful manager who absolutely won't let people work on weekends or holidays, while earning double that. Not out of some corporate cheapness, but just telling us not to waste our time working when we don't need to be.
Don't ever let anyone make you think a lack of work ethic is what cost you not being treated like shit. I groveled and volunteered for shifts at my previous job, sometimes working three weeks in a row. I was turned down for any promotion or move to a higher wage time and again. They constantly wanted everyone to prove they deserved a level of respect that is now baseline for even the lowest person on the totem pole at my job.
Anyone who tells you that you aren't working hard enough is leaving out all of the times they got lucky or said the right things that the right people wanted to hear at just the right time.
