Here's the long and short of it;
Short; No matter what state you live in, you need about double that state's minimum wage to get by.
The Long: Single people are heavily penalized because we have to work 2x as many hours in order to afford the same 2 bedroom apartment a couple might want. Single parents more so.
The Longer: Half of Americans are single. There is no freedom if no matter where you go, you have to spend 2x as many hours at work in order to afford your costs.
