I feel like I could never sue my employer

I was talking to my partner earlier about something their employer was doing that is blatantly illegal. I suggested looking into their rights since this could cost them a lot of money. Well they immediately responded that if they sued it would be on their record and probably public and therefore would ruin their career prospects. They also wouldnt get a reference which would make finding future jobs very hard. Which is true? What's the point of employment protections if we can't enforce them? The system is built up so that you either suffer in silence or get punished when you stand up for yourself. So employers break the law in ways that are honestly pretty big but just small enough that it's not worth the consequences for suing. Sorry for the ramble but this is just really frustrating.
